USCCB Videos on Faith and Politics
To Learn more about "Civilizing It," Read New Jersey Catholic Conference Executive Director Jim King's column on "Civilizing It For a Better Kind of Politics:" Town Square newsletter, Vol. 1, No. 1, January 2022
"We need to participate [in civics] for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern."
- Pope Francis, Morning Meditation in the Chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae, Monday September 16, 2013.
The Catholic Church calls for political engagement shaped by the moral convictions of well-formed consciences focused on the dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good, and the protection of the weak and vulnerable. To support this calling, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) offers Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (en Español), a teaching document on the political responsibility of Catholics. This resource offers guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and duties as participants in our democracy.
As we approach New Jersey's general election day on November 5, 2024, The New Jersey Catholic Conference will provide this and other resources to assist the faithful with living their responsibility to properly form their consciences; to engage in civil and respectful public dialogue; and to shape political choices in the coming election, and all elections.
When the Church encourages Catholics to participate in the public policy debate, she always reminds the faithful of their obligation to properly form their conscience in light of Sacred Scripture and prayerful reflection on Church teaching. Catholics cannot form their conscience in isolation from the teaching of the Church.
