Dr. George Corwell, director of the Office of Education for the New Jersey Catholic Conference, testified on behalf of the Council for American Private Education (NJ CAPE), in front of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee on April 25. As treasurer of NJ CAPE - - which is a coalition of state affiliates serving private elementary and secondary schools - - Dr. Corwell's testimony focused on an increase in nonpublic school transportation to $1,300 per student and an increase to $1,300 per service for compensatory education (remedial language arts and mathematics) funding.
The Legislature will be working on the state budget for fiscal year 2024 over the next two months. According to the New Jersey Constitution, a balanced Budget must be approved as an Appropriations Act and signed by the Governor before July 1, when the next fiscal year begins.
Following Dr. Corwell's testimony, an Action Alert was issued urging supporters to contact legislators to request the addtional funding.
